Since the year 1994 the Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks) is a part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage as an industrial monument. More than 100 years (from 1873 to 1986) iron steel was produced here.
The Völklinger Hütte was the first industrial monument in the world which was declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Today it's considered an important facility of the European industrial culture and it's an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Culture (ERIH).
The area was originally 260 hectare large, but today the World Heritage Site covers "just" 10 hectare. The area can be viewed, but there are guided tours as well. The entire area is a place for cultural events on a regular base: Open-Air Rock concerts as well as classical Chamber music.
There's a multitude of exhibitions which took place here. Examples:
• Leonardo da Vinci
• Historic nude photography
• The human brain
• The Celts
and way more. In 2004 the "Ferrodrom" was established which is the first Science Center in the Region Saarland - Lorraine - Luxemburg, and which is a multimedial experience about iron and steel in the broadest sense. There are exhibits about the cultural history of iron (Iron Age) as well as special guided tours by former iron workers who can describe the work at the blast furnaces really graphically.
During the nights the entire area is illuminated colorfully by two different artists who created light art installations.

The Bostalsee (50 km north of Völklingen in the nature reserve 'Saar-Hunsrück') is the largest recreational lake in Southwest Germany, with a water surface of 120 hectares. 12 hectares are considered a protected zone with low water areas especially for rare animals and plants. It's a barrier lake which means that it was created artificially. Nonetheless, there is no energetic use, it's a recreational area only.
'Calypso' is a swimming, spa and wellness paradise in Saarbrücken, less than 20 km from Völklingen. The visitor finds a huge number of saunas and steam baths here, as well as massages, beauty treatments etc. The speciality is called 'Rasul' which is a special oriental ceremony with mud and peelings. So if you like it a bit less calmly – no problem, there are lts of water slides.
The 'Saarland-Rundwanderweg' (Saarland hiking trail) shows a length of 273 km in a "circle". Starting in Saarbrücken, it "touches" (amongst other cities) Völklingen as well. Here one can enjoy undisturbed nature, and it's a pleasure to be here. The relicts of the former Saarland coal mines show interesting details of the recent history.
