After the arrival at Essen main station please go downstairs to the U-Bahn. Take the U 11 direction 'Messe' and exit at 'Messe Ost / Gruga' (ticket at the ticket machine, 2,50 €, stand: 2014). The Tropenhaus (tropical house) is located in the Grugapark.
The city of Essen is accessible via several highways. Parking for the visit in the Grugapark can be found in the Kühlshammerweg (free).
Take the bus 142 from Essen Hbf to the main entrance of the Grugapark. You can buy a ticket by the bus driver (2,50 €, stand: 2014).
The nearest airport to Essen is Düsseldorf International. The driving time by car to the Grugapark is 25 minutes, by train to Essen Hbf also (regional train or ICE).

The Grugapark is a park in Essen and spread over 65 acres. The park is used for recreation, as a game and sports facility and venue for concerts and festivals and is situated south of the city centre. All year round, the park is open from 9:00 until the onset of darkness.
One of the main attractions in the Grugapark is the 'Tropenhaus' (tropical house) in pyramid shape. In the pyramid of the tropical rain forest, you can immerse into a different, fascinating cosmos. Temperature by 30 degrees, high humidity, the smell of earth and vegetation and the deep green thicket of plants put the visitors in a deep jungle. The bamboo standing at the foot of a waterfall, the largest grass of the Earth, can grow up to 25 cm on the day!

The city of Essen as European capital of culture 2010 offers countless attractions (Zeche Zollverein, Gartenstadt Margarethenhöhe, Baldeneysee, Museum Folkwang, Synagoge and many more). The best way to discover the city is a city tour by bus (in winter and summer). Starting point is the tourist information directly at the main station.
Essen is also known as "Essen, die Einkaufsstadt" (Essen, the shopping city). Make a stroll through the pedestrian zone and enjoy the lively atmosphere, the countless shopping options and restaurants or cafés.
In the Grugapark since 2010 (February and March) "Parkleuchten" (park shine) takes place. Sculptures, objects and also the nature are illuminated and inspire the visitors.
