The powerful, above the town of Speyer Cathedral is not only one of the most important monuments of the Romanesque, but also throughout Europe the largest preserved Romanesque church. The history of the cathedral is a story of destruction and construction. It survived war and peace and reflects the history of the city Speyer as well as the throughout the region and the country. After 30 years of construction, the church was consecrated in 1061. After its completion around 1100 A.d., the DOM by the Salian Emperor Conrad II. founded with a length of 134 meters was the largest church in Europe. With the monumental building, the ruler wanted to demonstrate his religious-political claim to power over the Papacy. After being destroyed and reconstructed, the Speyer Cathedral is in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1981.

The Cathedral includes a laying grave of eight German emperors and kings, four queens and a number of bishops.
