    Why Go There?

An old oak tree with its own postal address – the Bräutigamseiche Eutin (a city located in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein) is a nice and unique location for lovers.

Around the Bräutigamseiche (groom oak tree) in Eutin are many myths and legends. One of them is a story very similar to Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'.

Minna, the daughter of the forester, fell in love with Wilhelm, the son of a Leipzig chocolate manufacturer. Nobody was allowed to know, and certainly not the forester. That's why the two met often secretly under the tree and exchanged love letters through a knothole.

Over a year past. Finally, Minna's father saw how serious it was to her, he relented and gave its approval. On 2 June 1891, Wilhelm wed his Minna under the oak tree. What a romantic Happy-End!

The story spread fast. It didn't take long and the first love-letters reached the tree. More and more lovers used the knothole to write letters. 1927, the post began with the letter delivery. Today, up to 50 letters reach the Bräutigamseiche daily from around the world (even from Japan, USA or Australia), only one does not exist: the Post secrecy. Anyone can take out post, read, and fooled if not satisfied.

About 100 couples have found themselves in this way. Some of them have married. Many come personally to Eutin and celebrate their wedding-days.

Some facts about the oak tree: Over 500 years old, a perimeter of 5 meters, 5 meter high – the tree is truly an imposing appearance.
