If you are looking for the perfect little town from the middle ages outfitted with a town wall, castle, medieval church, picturesque market square, and beautiful views look no further than Tangermünde.

Tangermünde is easily one of the best-preserved and most beautiful towns in Saxony-Anhalt. It's the perfect town for visitors short on time, but has plenty to offer for those who plan to enjoy a longer stay. Situated right off of the Elbe river, this 1000-year-old city is still almost entirely encompassed by a town wall. Right in the city center is the beautiful late-Gothic town hall, built in 1430. You can wander past the romantic half-timbered houses, and then feast your eyes on the real treat- St. Stephanskirche (Saint Stephan church). With its amazingly restored, colorful interior and the highest tower in the city, a visit to this impressive church has to be first on your list.

You can also check out the "Burgmuseum" (fortress museum) where you can learn all about the history of the castle, and then visit the palace built in 1700 under the reign of the Prussian King Friedrich I. After you're done sightseeing, take a nice stroll along the Elbe Promenade to relax and take in the beauty of the region.
