One of Europe’s most famous landmarks, the Heidelburg Castle attracts around a million visitors from around the world each year. The castle ruins are marked as a symbol of romanticism.
From its lofty position on top of Konigstuhl hill, the castle silhouette dominates the old town center of Heidelberg.
The rich and eventful history of Heidelberg Castle began in 1214 when Ludwig I received it from the Emporer Friedrich II. After the French troops withdrew from the castle on 2 March 1689, they set fire to the castle as ordered by France’s was council in order to prevent an enemy attack from this area. The castle walls and towers was immediately reconstructed in 1690 by Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine. It wasn’t until 1693 that the French were able to recapture the castle and finish the work they started with the fire by destroying the towers and walls with mines. In 1697 the castle was once again patched up. After fires set out in the castle in 1764 and 1860 from lightning plans to reconstruct the castle were back and forth and it wasn’t until early 1900s that restorations and historical development were made. Some of the Castle's residents include; The "Winter King" Frederick V, Elizabeth Charlotte, Princess Palatine and Charles de Graimberg.
Today the castle ruins stands as a symbol of Romanticism and History.
