    Why Go There?

    First mentioned in the 12th century, the moated castle of Anholt in the western part of Münsterland is one of the region's few privately owned castles.

    As part of the reconstruction of the castle, after 70% was destroyed in 1945, a museum was added to the Wasserburg Anholt.
     
    The collection of exhibited works is the largest historically evolved Private Pictures Collection of North Rhine-Westphalia with about 700 paintings. Outstanding works by Dutch painters of the 17th Century, such as Rembrandt, Jan van Goyen, Gerard ter Borch, Flemish (J. Breughel the Younger), German (Bartholomew Bruyn, Holbein, Jobst Harich), Spanish (Murillo) and Italian (Carlo Dolci, Salvator Rosa) are found at Wasserburg Anholt.

    Extensive collections of Chinese, Japanese, Dutch and German porcelain from the 17th and 18 Century and Renaissance and Baroque furniture (including Boulle technique) are available to the public here.

    The Wasserburg Anholt is surrounded by several baroque gardens and a large park.

    In the immediate vicinity of the Wasserburg Anholt extend 34-acres of historic parks and gardens, whose origins and evolution are directly related to the location and architectural history of the moated castle.

    With 40 different animals, the wildlife park "Anholter Schweiz" is a special attraction. Here you can see feeding times for wolves, lynx, bears and reindeer.
