    Why Go There?

Coastal landscape, dikes, windmills, numerous town canals and bikes - if you think you are in Holland you are mistaken. The beautiful seaport city Emden is still in Germany and has a lot to offer.

Spectacular coastline, extraordinary culture and a lovely city life - welcome to the sea port of Emden. Right in the heart of East Frisia the sea port city is absolutely worth living, it offers the perfect mixture of being traditional and open-minded at the same time. Visitors love the city not only for it´s history, the sport or the entertainment factor but also for it´s environs and the phenomenal coastal landscape.

The 1.200 years of history is closely linked with the sea port. Even though the history of the city on the river mouth Ems is very diverse one, the port has always influenced the fate of the city in a special way.

Emden is surrounded by a breathtaking ecological and touristic region with an excellent infrastructure. The city is characterised by its world famous universal port with the associated companies, ship -, automobile - and wind energy plant constructions. This unusual combination together with breathtaking environs do make a visit absolute worthwhile!

Friends of culture come at the "Kunsthalle" Art Gallery by Henri Nannen (founder of the STERN), the "Ostfriesisches Landmuseum" (East Frisian National Museum), the Johannes a Lasco library and museum ships at their own expense. Several times a year, the museum closes it´s doors for a week while exhibitions are changed.

Not interested in art? Discover the city from the water side! On the numerous canals, visitors can easily explore the city in a special way by canoe or pedal boat ride. The tourist offices give tips and have information on all canal tours as well as boat and bike hire.

Tipp (especially all pranksters): Don´t miss "Dat Otto Huus" in the home town of the eponymous comedian.
