The airports Leipzig/Halle and Hanover are approx. 130 km away. With a rental car it's quite easy to get to Wernigerode. By train it will take approx. 2.5 hours.
Between late November and Christmas
Bright half-timbered houses, affectionately decorated shop windows, beautifully decorated alleyways and the historic town hall from the 15th century – the Wernigerode Christmas market is a real „gem“.
Wernigerode is called "The colorful city in the Harz" for a good reason. The pictorial scenario in the Mid Ages city center with colorful half-timbered houses, historical town hall and contemplative alleyways and corners seem to be ideally suited for a romantic pre-Christmas atmosphere. The Christmas market itself is small but nice. Wernigerode Castle is enthroned over the entire scenery and invites the visitors for exciting sightseeing.
Craftwork and typical delicate food from the Harz region the manifold supply is providing with anything the heart desires. A wide framework program with puppet theater, story hours, performances of choirs and orchestras – young and old people are joined into the upcoming Christmas.
Christmassy guided city tours enchant with very special flair, and comfy restaurants and inns attract with regional specialities.
The Ore Mountains are greeting with a graved wooden pyramid in oversize format. The small edition in the own home is well known – traditional wing wheels, angels and lights – but the Wernigerode copy has the size of a market place (okay, this is a little bit exaggerating, but just a little bit): 5 or 6 meters high. This preciosity belongs to the city and is "on duty" since more than 20 years.

The "Harzer Schmalspurbahn" (Harz narrow-gauge railway) starts in Wernigerode and brings its passengers directly to the summit of the Brocken which is the highest mountain of the Harz region (1141,2 m). During the Christmas season, there's a special train running: Santa Clause attends the little passengers and has a little gift for every kid.
The Brocken area provides its guests with winter fun for anyone – large and small people: there are alpine ski areas for beginners as well as intermediate skiers or experts, there are fun parks for snowboarders, there are more than 500 km of cross-country skiing tracks, there are toboggans, snow tubing facilities, winter hiking trails and way more. Due to its altitude the region is relatively snow-safe.
The „Schierker Feuerstein“ is a cordial which is well-known far beyond the Harz area. The liquor is named after the so called „Feuersteinklippen“ (firestone cliffs) which is a rock formation in Schierke (a little village nearby). These rocks have the same red-brown color as the beverage. The recipe of the „Schierker Feuerstein“ is more than 100 years old and is kept secret strictly.
