Between the beginning of the Advent season and Epiphany
The Speyer (Spires) christmas market is not just one of the most beautiful christmas markets in Germany; it's above all a "New Years market" as well.
Traditionally the Speyer christmas and new year's market doesn't last - as usual - till christmas, but additionally up to Epiphany of the following year. Starting traditionally at the Monday prior to 1st Advent the Maximilianstraße (the Speyer pedestrian area) will bei illuminated by thousands of colorful lights; and around the fountain in front of the "Alte Münze" it smells deliciously of roasted almonds, bratwurst, spices, gingerbread and hot spiced wine.
Speyer is a market town, thus you cannot compare the speyer christmas market with big events such as in Nürnberg (Christkindlesmarkt) or Dresden (Striezelmarkt). But even the small, the homelike is what makes the congeniality of this market.
Directly besides the fountain in front of the "Alte Münze" there is a carousel for kids, and a couple of steps in cathedral direction the so-called "Heaven's phone". Here the children may have a phone call with the Christ Child and communicate their christmas wishes.
On a small open air stage littel concerts or theater performances for kids as well as adults are shown regularly.
Special: "Altpörtel in Flammen" (= Altpoertel in flames - illumination of the historic city gate at the end of the pedestrian area); twice each year during the christmas market
Special recommendation: each hut selling mulled wine ("Glühwein") a special sort of hot spiced wine, made from "Dornfelder" which is the name of grapes that are grown particularly in Rhineland-Palatinate. This special speciality is a bit more expensive than the "normal" one (usually 50 cent), but it pays off in any case!
Escape Address: 67346 Speyer, Platz vor der Alten Münze, Speyer, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
"Domhof" - a so-called house brewery which is located in striking distance from the christmas market. The served beer is self-brewed, and a delicious meal is available as well. During the summer season there is a large beer garden, and every now and then one can listen to live music there.
The "Postgalerie" (post gallery) is a modern shopping center beyond a landmarked frontage (historical post office). More than 15,000 square meters bring an exclusive shopping experience to everyone. Fashion, beauty, shoes, jewelry, gastronomy - this and more can be found here.
The Technical Museum in Speyer offers - amongst others - Europe's largest exhibition about astronautics. The center of this exhibition is the russian Original Space Shuttle "Buran". In addition to this there is an Original Boeing 747 which can be walked in and on (one of the airfoils).
