Between November and late December (after christmas)
The christmas market in the historic city center of Schwerin lasts longer than the most german christmas markets usually last, namely christmas and beyond, until late December.
Around the brick-builded gothic cathedral, in the center of the historic city center of Schwerin, not later than late November the christmassy lichts begin to illuminate, and a delicious smell of bratwurst, spices, hot spiced wine, roasted almonds, gingerbread or Crêpes is waving over the area between the Mecklenburgstraße and the Schlachtermarkt: the christmas market has started again.
Every year in the center of the market a large - more than 20 meter tall - fir tree is aligned, decorated with more than 10,000 lights; and this shows to a great extent which season is currently predominant, namely the christmas season.
On the large stage, directly besides the large christmas tree, there is a daily "consultation hour" with Santa Clause, where the kids can remark their christmas wishes. Moreover, fairytales are read here to the audience.
On the subject fairytales: In the Mecklenburgstraße there is one booth besides another - with illustrations of all the well-known fairytales, such as Mother Holle, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty - there will be starry-eyed kids for sure!
Kids are actually a very important element of the Schwerin christmas market. In the "Kids World" on the Schlachtermarkt they can paint, tinker, bake or just rampage.
In the huts around the Schwerin cathedral the visitors discover all kinds of beautiful things: craftswork of any kind, such as wood carving, crib-figurines, (costume) jewelry, glass, ceramics - what more could you ask for?
On the large ice rink (more than 500 square meters) which is opened till January, small and large people can't just skate but play bavarian curling or hockey or celebrate a party as well.
