Between late November and christmas
The beginning of the Advent season: the area around the Water Tower at the Friedrichsplatz is illuminated christmassily and there are delicious smells of bratwurst, spices, gingerbread and Crêpes in the air.
The Mannheim Water Tower (Wasserturm) is situated directly in the city center - face to face with the beginning of the Mannheim pedestrian area "Planken".
The Water Tower was built at the end of the 19th century and was used - as the name is already telling - for drinking water supply incl. the maintenance of operation and the necessary pressure. Together with the trick fountains on the back side, at the Friedrichsplatz, it's an astonishing scenery for the Mannheim christmas market.
More than 200 lovingly designed booths are waiting for you, and you'll find all what your heart desires: craftwork made of glass, ceramics or wood, christmas tree decorations, toys and way more. And naturally the culinary pleasures, such als bratwurst, hot spicede wine, roasted almonds, gingerbread or Crêpes.
Additionally, at the "Kapuzinerplanken" - in a distance of about 500 or 600 meters from the Water Tower - another, smaller christmas market takes place, which is worth a visit as well. The organizer attached his importance to that only products are offered which are self-made by the vendor. This means: craftwork only, no merchants! This provides a special attraction, particularly as it's possible to look over the craftpeople's shoulders. It goes without saying that the visitor is provided with culinary pleasures as well.
Many exhibitors and their supplies are changing in a weekly cycle - thus, it's worth to visit this market more than once.
