A trip to Gondwana is essential if you and your children want to learn about dinosaurs. Situated at Schiffweiler near to Saarbrücken and on the borders of France and Luxembourg, Gondwana is a delight for people of all ages.
Taking you through a historical journey of the ages in which you can learn how Mammoths lived as well as other dinosaurs, Gondwana has several different themed areas and all of them are exciting to see.
From the start of the universe with the Big Bang up to the era of space flight, this is a theme park that shows you something extra. Take the Z.E.R.A, a time express travel trip, that takes you from the present day right back to the era of the dinosaurs and you will see all the changing eras in between.
The evolution on earth is explained in a way that is easy to understand so children will learn as well as have fun. Seven different prehistoric ecosystems have also been reproduced in this amazing theme park.
One of the largest dinosaurs to walk the earth was the Argentinosaurus and a skeleton of this monster was found in Patagonia. This has been copied for the exhibit and it serves to bring home how huge these creatures really were.
Other exhibits include giant scorpions and dragonflies, mammoths and many other kinds of dinosaurs which come alive in the park.
Over 5 million years ago a huge prehistoric shark now known as Megalodon lived on earth. It grew up to 18 metres long and could weigh 100,000 kilograms. The teeth alone were 18 centimetres in length and it had a biting force that was 10 times stronger than a Great White Shark. This is one truly scary creature and you can see it at Gondwana.
When you have seen the exhibits of dinosaurs there are other attractions at the park like the 3D cinema and the children’s playground. If you get tired ,take a rest in the Gondwana restaurant which serves a wide choice of snacks and drinks. In summer you can take your coffee and cake onto the terrace outside.

By Air
Saarbrücken Airport is the closest to Gondwana park. It is about 21 kilometres away. There are buses and trains to the station near to the park which is then just a 15 minute walk. You can also get there by car.
By Train
Leave the airport terminal and walk or take a cab to Saarbrücken-Burbach then take a regional express train to Saarbrücken Hbf (main station). Change to another regional express to Landsweiler-Reden and then the park is just a 15 minute walk away. Journey time in total is 47 minutes.
By Road
Leave the airport and follow the A1 motorway all the way to Goethestraße 53. Or, use the A1 and A8 to exit 19 and then take the L262 to Kreisstraße to Goethestraße in Schiffweiler. It takes around 25 minutes for the journey if the traffic is light.
Visit The Bostalsee Lake
The Bostalsee Lake is just 30 minutes away by car. It has two large beaches and you can swim, sunbathe or, if you are feeling more energetic, you can walk the many trails around the lake. There are places to hire bikes and some water sports including wind surfing and sailing. Snacks and drinks are available at the kiosks and cafes at the lake.

The Völklinger Hütte is a large ironworks and it has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. There are four blast furnaces and these were working right up until the 1980s. After the site closed it was turned into a museum which shows you the complete story of the iron industry.
