Germany has many museums but museums are not always about ancient history. One of the most fascinating and enjoyable exhibitions is at the Autostadt Wolfsburg, a classic car museum that has something extra.
Located next to the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, the Autostadt Wolfsburg not only shows off classic cars but also has a tour that enables you to see exactly how the cars are produced today. The popularity of the museum is due not only to the exhibits but also to the theme park which is an excellent place for families to visit.
The large grounds feature pavilions that display the principle models of the Volkswagen brand and there is a large cinema which shows short films in German. The Autostadt begins outside Wolfsburg and runs for four miles.
Visitors can drive around the off-road Volkswagen Touareg accompanied by a guide. The track is very challenging and it includes hills at high angles, a sand pit, a water tank and a log road. Children can have a go on the mini track driving small electric versions of the famous Volkswagen Beetle.
The pavilions show the different production methods for Porsche, Bentley, Skoda, Lamborghini and Seat. In addition to seeing how the plant works and how cars are made there are plenty of other activities to enjoy such as the skating rink and nature walks in the surrounding parkland.
Whilst many children may balk at the idea of a visit to a museum, this one is so different that you may find it difficult to drag them away at the end of the trip. Whether you have a passion for automobiles or just want to experience something different, the Autostadt Wolfsburg is well worth a visit.
