Designated in 2013 as Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail, the Hiking Trail Eltzer Burgpanorama starts at the centre of the small village of Wierschem and delivers to you the sensational panorama of the Moselle Plateau.
The trail leads downwards with natural footpaths and you then enter the wild and deep valley at Eltzbach with a sight of the stunning Pyrmont Castle (Burg Pyrmont).
Following paths through the Eltz Forest you will cross the Eltzbach, a small creek which winds its way around the woods. Then, the path joins the Moselle Heights track (Moselhöhenweg) and finally ends on a hill from which you can see the fairy tale castle Burg Eltz. This is one of the most spectacular castles in Germany and you can go into the castle using the ancient medieval stone bridge. This is an excellent place to take a break before continuing your hike.
When you leave Eltz Castle the path is one that takes in the beautiful natural surroundings of the forest and along the river’s edge. You will eventually come to the Ringelstein Mill which is a restaurant/cafe where you can also take a break to enjoy a snack and a drink. Choose a cool beer or a coffee and cake. Continuing the hike, the trail runs uphill but you will be rewarded for your energetic walk with a breathtaking view over the Moselle Plateau.
The length of the Eltzer Burgpanorama hiking trail is 12.6 kilometres and it can be achieved comfortably in four hours. Designated as an Intermediate level hike, it can be tackled by families with children as long as they are not too small. You will ascend for around 400 metres during the hike but the slog up to the plateau makes it very worthwhile when you see the view. The Eltz Castle Panorama Trail certainly deserves its title of German’s most beautiful hiking trail.
