Greiz – A Fairytale City In Vogtland

The rich collection of architectural styles that are found in Greiz have led it to be known as a fairytale city or the Pearl Of The Vogtland. There are buildings from many different periods and all of them look stunning. Located where the River Weiße Elster meets the Göltzsch stream, Greiz was first mentioned in 1209.

Art Nouveau And Castles In Greiz

The area known as In Prof.-Dr.-Friedrich-Schneider-Straße 4 houses one of the first examples of Art Deco architecture and this was built in 1911. Other residential buildings show revivalist styles but the two main highlights of the town are the castles.

The ruling dynasty of the House of Reuss built two castles; the Upper Castle (Oberes Schloss) and the Lower Castle (Unteres Schloss). These were designed and built by famous architects of the day and are still considered to be unique.

The Lower Castle was an original Renaissance building but was extensively rebuilt after a fire in the early 1800s. Inside you can visit the history museum which displays local artifacts. You will also find the tourist information office there where you can find out more about Greiz.

There is also the Summer Palace which displays a variety of historical artifacts and a collection of books. Also on the list of things to see are the Satiricum, the White Cross and the Cronschwitz Monastery Ruins.

Greizer Park At Greiz

There is a large park at the centre of Griez which has been named the English Garden. This is next to the beautiful River Elster and the garden dates back to 1650. It has exotic trees and many different species of flora and fauna. The lake is a wonderful place to visit and will allow you some moments to reflect upon the beauty that surrounds the town of Greiz.
