The Burg Eltz has 850 years of history attached to it. As one of the most famous castles in Germany, Eltz has never been destroyed, has been featured on a banknote and still belongs to the original family that commissioned its construction.

The Early Years Of Eltz Castle

Although built in medieval times, the first time that Eltz Castle is mentioned in documents is in 1157 when a deed of donation was signed by Emperor Frederick the First and witnessed by Rudolf von Eltz.



The castle lies along the trade route of the Moselle river so it became strategically very important. It is situated high above the valley with a foundation stone on an oval shaped rock that was already 70 metres high before building began. Over the years extra rooms and stories were added and in 1742 the beautiful murals were painted.

In modern times, the Count and Countess of Eltz have hosted many fine events at the castle. The unique architecture and the treasury are two of the highlights that must be seen when take a guided tour around this magnificent castle. There are suits of armour and weapons such as swords and flails which conjure up a real picture of the past.

Tours are available in English so that everyone can learn all about this superb castle with its halls that used to host stupendous feasts.

The castle has been extensively restored under the guidance of the German Foundation For The Protection of Monuments. The Knights Hall and the Rodendorf Kitchen are two of the other rooms that have proved to be very popular with visitors.

Getting To Eltz Castle

By Air

The distance from Frankfurt-Hahn airport to Eltz Castle is 60.5 kilometres and this is the closest option. There are good transport links to reach this very pretty part of Germany.

By Train

There is no direct train from the airport so your journey will start by bus to Bullay(DB). The bus runs every two hours and you stay on it for 8 stops. From Bullay(DB) take the regional train to Hatzenport a journey of some 32 minutes then there is a twice daily bus to Burg Eltz, Wierschem which is just 900 metres from the Eltz Castle.

By Road

Travelling by car the journey to Eltz Castle from Frankfurt-Hahn takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Get on the L193 and go via the B327, L204, L2020 and K39 to Wierschem. Follow directions to an unnamed road which takes you to the Eltz Castle.

Try Some Moselle Wine Tasting

The region of the Moselle is one of the most famous for German wines. There are plenty of vineyards where you can try out some of the huge variety of wines that are known as Moselle. Some of the most well known names are Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Dorsa. The local grapes give the wine its distinctive taste and they are grown in and around Eltz Castle.



Hiking Or A Trip On The River

Hiking enthusiasts will find a multitude of trails and one to try is the Eltzer Burgpanorama. It covers 12 kilometres and takes you through the beautiful Moselle landscapes. The trail passes by Eltz Castle and gives you another view of this magnificent structure. The initial trail leads to a longer one which covers 185 kilometres. It takes you through some of the most beautiful forests and valleys in the Moselle region.

Finally, don’t forget to try a river cruise. There are many companies that will take you on the River Moselle through the middle valleys of the Rhine and out to Loreley cliff. One special tour includes a trip to the Drachenfels mountain where Siegfried was said to have slayed a dragon. You can also visit Cochem which has museums with many relics from the Roman and Celtic eras.
