The Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is a route that was devised in the 1950’s to help guide visitors to some of the most beautiful and picturesque towns in Germany. Dinkelsbühl is one of these towns with splendid towers and a preserved city wall, both of which are set in a beautiful landscape of Bavaria in Southern Germany.

A Historical Medieval Town

Situated on the river, Dinkelsbühl is fascinating and has a long history stretching back to the 8th century. Founded by the Carolingian kings, the town has some wonderful old timbered buildings and luckily these were not damaged during the war so the ancient churches and ancestral homes have remained intact for everyone to enjoy.

A Baroque Castle, Monuments And A Museum

The Baroque castle at Dinkelsbühl is known as the Castle of the Teutonic Order and it has a Roccoco chapel. St. George’s Minster is a Gothic church and in front of the Minster is the monument to Christoph von Schmidt, a famous German writer of children’s stories.

Dinkelsbühl has a museum of history which exhibits local artifacts found in the town and it has reconstructions of ancient homes from the town.

The Area Around Dinkelsbühl

In the area around Dinkelsbühl there are plenty of parks and theatres which have a variety of shows. The landscape around the town is ideal for hikers and the town centre feels really medieval with shops that sell old fashioned arts and crafts.

There are also camping sites and opportunities to take part in activities like golf, fishing and climbing.

A Walk Around The City Walls

Taking a stroll around the city walls which feature 18 towers and four gates will give you a real impression of how life was lived in the past. This is a fascinating town with much to recommend it to visitors.

One of the most interesting trips, if you don’t mind bats, is to the youth hostel where you can learn about these protected creatures and see into their habitat. The timbered buildings of Dinkelsbühl allow you to envisage history and embrace the character of this lovely town.
