Cottbus

Years Of History In A Wonderful City

The second largest city in Brandenburg, Cottbus was established in the 10th century and is loaded with historical buildings and events. With 850 years of history to show off, the city was originally known for its wool trade and its drapery was exported all over the area. The small and narrow lanes in the centre give the city a cosy feel but there are also some magnificent Baroque facades on the buildings that also give it grandeur.

A Cultural Centre For Sorbians

Sorbians are a minority group of people who have lived in the city for hundreds of years. Many of the signs in Cottbus are bilingual. The language of the Sorbians is in danger of dying out and so the city fathers try to help keep this traditional language alive.

Until the reunification of 1990, Cottbus was part of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). However, now it is a city where you roam around freely and discover some of the wonderful parts of Germany that were previously hidden away.

Natural And Charming

Full of romantic cafes on the narrow side streets, Cottbus has very friendly people who want to show off their historic city to everyone who arrives here. Often described as the ‘greenest city in Germany’, it has parks and natural surroundings that are epitomised by the beautiful River Spree. The river crosses right through the city. Boat trips on the Spree allow you to enjoy some of the gorgeous green spaces and wildlife that is in abundance in this charming city.

A Zoological Garden

The Tierpark Cottbus is the largest zoological garden in Brandenburg and is found on the River Spree between Branitzer Park and the Spreeauenpark. It has an idyllic atmosphere and with over 1,200 animals to see, it is a trip worth making for both the young and adults.
