Castle Steinau

A Memorial To The Brothers Grimm

Like many other German castles, the Castle Steinau is really a palace that dates from the Renaissance period but what makes this one so special is that it is the site of a memorial to the Brothers Grimm (of fairy tale fame).

The castle is closed during January and February and every Monday throughout the year. The opening hours for March to November are 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The Fairy Tale Route

Part of the fairy tale route of Germany, the Castle Steinau was built in 1525 and is one of the best preserved Renaissance palaces. It has long been the secondary residence of the Earls von Hanau and was enlarged in the 16th/17th centuries into a pentagonal shape. The castle parlour and the kitchens are often used for presentations.

The Brother Grimm Memorial

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were and still are the most famous publishers of fairy tales to come out of Germany. There fantasy fairy tales have been translated into almost every language in the world. Everyone has heard and thrilled with delight to the scary tale of Hansel and Gretel and the romantic tale of the Frog Prince and these are just two of the hundreds of fairy tales that were collected and published by the Brothers Grimm.

The importance of their contribution to history and the myths of Germany and wider parts of Europe has been memorialised in the statue that was erected at the Castle Steinau.

A Medieval History

Parts of the wall of the Castle Steinau remain from the early medieval structure and the tower which has a square base and dome in the Baroque style dominates the architecture of this fine building.

Surrounded by a moat that is between 4 and 5 metres deep and between 18 and 25 metres wide, the castle is really a fortified palace and inside the Hirschgraben is a children’s playground.
