A holiday at Lake Ammersee is very popular. It is one of the largest lakes in Bavaria and has much to offer visitors. There is an abundance of nature, many water sports and also some Bavarian culture with speciality dishes in the restaurants.
With an elevation of 533 metres above sea level and a maximum depth of 81 metres, this huge lake is a result of ice melting from glaciers. It is fed by the River Ammer from which it takes its name.
Ever since 1879 there have been passenger ferries on Lake Ammersee and these still operate today providing a great service for locals and visitors alike. You can take a trip of an old paddle steamer or a modern motor boat and see the lake from another perspective.
Summertime brings a lot of visitors to Lake Ammersee and if you decide to come here you can enjoy water sports like sailing and wind surfing or you can just take a leisurely swim. Around the lake there are plenty of cycle paths and trails for hiking or jogging. Routes cover many kilometres around this huge lake and you can take in the wonderful natural landscapes and wildlife that is here.
The quality of the water in Lake Ammersee is very good and it has an abundance of fish. Certain areas of the lake are reserved for swimming and these lidos are monitored and safe. If you have taken a swim or been for a long bike ride then the beer gardens that are dotted around the lake will be very welcome.
In the winter there is the opportunity to take part in cross country skiing, skating and races in snow shoes.

By Air
You can fly to Munich Airport which is just a 40 minute drive from Lake Ammersee. There are also plenty of other ways to travel to the lake using the railway and taxi services. The airport is 80 kilometres from the lake.
By Train
From Munich airport train station, there is a train that runs every 20 minutes to Herrsching station. It is a journey of around one hour and 30 minutes and the rest of the journey is by taxi. Change to the taxi and it is 18.8 kilometres to the lake, a journey time of approximately 20 minutes.
By Road
Leave Munich airport and use the motorways A92 and A96 to reach the lake. Leave the A96 at exit 29 to Greifenberg. Follow St2055 and then Uttinger Str., Schondorfer Str., Dießener Str and St 2055 to reach your destination at Lake Ammersee.
Exploring The Region Around The Lake
Try a horseback ride to see more of the area around the lake. Or, if you prefer someone else to do the work take a relaxing ride in a carriage. In the winter months there are also sled rides and husky races to see. Guides are on hand to provide tours for hiking and you can take one of the snowshoes trails if you are feeling energetic.
Amusements Near To The Lake
The miniature golf course is a great way to spend a few hours and there is one which gives you some stunning views of Lake Ammersee. Challenge your family members to a game with 18 different holes that all have pitfalls with which to contend.
