Dessau Roßlau

Dessau Roßlau

A Mecca For Modern Architecture

Dessau-Roßlau is a city in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt at a point where the rivers Elbe and Mulde join together. The city itself was created in 2007 and half of it (Dessau) is on the left bank of the Mulde whilst the other part (Roßlau) is on the right bank of the Elbe.

The city has a wonderful mixture of different types of architecture and also exhibits the world’s largest amount of Bauhaus structures from the 1920’s.

The Garden Kingdom At Dessau Roßlau

The famous Bauhaus movement of art and architecture was located in Dessau in the years 1925 to 1932 and it has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are pretty parks and the wonderful Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz (Garden Kingdom) that was created by Prince Leopold III. It contains palaces and smaller structures alongside meadows, rivers, dykes and lakes.

You can walk, ride or cycle through the Garden Kingdom which was created to harmonise man and nature. The buildings are blended in with the natural surroundings which gives you a feeling of an infinite stretch of uninhabited parkland.

Outside Of Dessau Roßlau

Just on the outskirts of Dessau you will find wonderful neo classical palaces. The Luisium Palace has English gardens and the Rococo Mosigkau Palace houses the picture gallery of Anhalt. There is a zoo at the Mausoleumspark and the remains of the City Castle.

The Bauhaus Movement At Dessau Roßlau

The college of architecture that taught the Bauhaus Movement was moved to Dessau in 1925 when it was forced to close in Weimar. Many well known artists like Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky lectured at the college but once again it was forced to be closed in 1931 when the Nazis started to take control.

You can visit some of the Bauhaus structures in Dessau including the college itself which was designed and built by Walter Adolph Georg Gropius. There is also the Gropius House and the Klee-Kandinsky House.

The Town Hall And Churches

The town hall at Dessau was built in 1901 and has a striking design. There are several churches to see including the Propsteikirche (St Peter and St Paul) and the church of St Josef.

If you like museums then there are some here that are very different to any others you may have encountered. The Hugo Junkers Technical Museum and the Museum of Natural and Prehistory are both worth a visit.

Take a stroll around this unique Baroque town and you will understand why UNESCO has seen fit to make it a part of the World Heritage Sites.
